My dating scan is due in a couple of weeks and the hospital has stated that i need to drink water for the external scan, and an empty bladder for the internal scan. What i want to know is whether they INSIST that you have the external scan or if they give up and do the internal scan?? With my last pregnancy i just had the external scan as i was 20 weeks and coped fine, but i'm sure i won't have a full bladder when they scan me this time as i just can't hold it!! Before everyone says "ring the hospital" i will do nearer the scan date, i just want to know how everyone else coped and if you've had the same problem as me??? You have to have a full bladder when you have an ultrasound.

how much water to drink before an ultrasound? | Yahoo Answers
I have my first scan tomorrow and I have been told by friend to drink a substantial amount of water before I go for it. The midwife or hospital have not mentioned this although I do remember my sister drinking copious amounts of fluid and nearly peeing herself during the scan!! That was 8 yrs ago though. No its still the same - the reason for drinking all the water is so that the bladder is full and this pushes things up so they can get a clear picture of the baby. Start to drink lots of water 30 mins before your appointment and keep drinking while your in waiting room, i wouldnt drink loads any earlier than this incase they are running late with the appointments - if your in the UK this usually happens at my scan they were running 40 mins late and I thought I was going to wet myself.
